Chicago is rich in history and known for its architectural marvels. But did you know that the windy city is also the home of some of the weirdest spa treatments in the world? If you don’t believe me, read the article below and discover a different side of Chicago.
Ever wondered what Egyptian kings and queens used on their skin to preserve their good looks? For a measly 0, the Mi Spa in Chicago will make you feel like royalty with this ancient beauty secret: fresh Egyptian mud!
Spa owner Dominga Cortez Johnson said the magical mud is not the typical one you’ll find in your backyard on a rainy day. Egyptian mud is supposedly rich in vitamins A, E, and essential fatty acids.
“We have it shipped in and the clients love it. We take only a small amount because it is very potent and pure and mix it with shea butter,” Johnson said.
During the 90-minute session, dead skin is removed before the person’s body is covered with mud. The treatment ends with a relaxing massage.
“Your skin feels like a baby’s bottom and the effect is not only for today; it will last for 2 to 3 weeks,” Johnson said.
Caviar is a delicacy that is associated with luxury and wealth. Made from the processed, salted eggs of fish, notably the sturgeon, caviar was once a favorite of czars and emperors. Despite its high price, it is commonly served in Russia during weddings and holiday feasts.
However, an enterprising spa has found another use for this expensive product. To combat wrinkles, the Channings Day Spa offers caviar facials to its clients. The treatment costs 5 for 90 minutes and uses freeze dried caviar imported from Switzerland.
That may sound fishy to some but not to Spa President Cheryl Renella who claims this delicacy can make you look younger.
“It’s our best anti-aging facial. Caviar has the same composition as human skin. It’s composed of 70 percent amino acids and trace minerals. One treatment will soften fine lines and wrinkles,” Renella said.
For beer lovers with tired feet, go to the Exsalonce Spa for a beer pedicure that reportedly works wonders on calluses. Your favorite brew is brimming with the health benefits of hops (the flowers of the hop vine used to add flavor to beer) and antioxidant-rich polyphenols.
“Beer has enzymes that soften calluses and the hops moisturize the feet. We wanted to incorporate men into our spa, bring them in, and make them feel welcome. We use about 24 cans per week. It’s one of our most popular services,” said Exsalonce owner Tony Odisho.
