Ayurvedic Health Spa

Modern Spas invoke the image of luxury and soaking in a ‘spa’ tub with beauty treatments. However, traditional natural spas have been around for thousands of years and were used for healing arthritis, skin diseases and other health related problems by ancient medical practitioners in India, Romans and even by Maori tribes of New Zealand.

Ayurvedic Health Spas have gained popularity and remain a magnetic source for people looking for alternative treatments for chronic pains.

Many Ayurvedic Spas offer Ayurvedic massages called ‘Abhyanga’ or special herbal oil massages.  The body is massaged using long, smooth strokes from top to bottom and making a figure eight. Unlike other massages, Ayurvedic massage starts from the head, neck, and back while the patient is in a sitting position and progresses with the patient lying on her back and finally her stomach. The whole treatment can take from 45 minutes to an hour.  An assistant is present, ensuring that the herbal oil is kept warm at a specific temperature at all times.  The herbal oil concoction is meant for relaxation, treating skin diseases, and arthritis, among other ailments.  There are two massage therapists working on you at the same time who make sure that circulation of the blood is increased. The increased  blood flow to the brain and is believed to help create focus and enhance memory.

Traditional Indian Wellness and Beauty Treatments

The revitalising qualities of Indian beauty treatments have been recognised for hundreds of years, and today, these centuries-old therapies are offered at a few of Cape Town’s top health spas.

Known as Ayurveda, this system of traditional Indian therapy uses massage and herbs to relax the body, helping to restore the natural balance, improve circulation and eliminate toxins. These therapies also stimulate the body’s cells and endocrine system, encouraging the secretion of naturally produced “medicines”, which help to heal the body from the inside out.

Whilst many beauty practitioners claim to be familiar with Ayuredic practices, it’s only trained therapists who are able to administer these massages effectively. To gain the greatest health benefits from Indian massages, be sure to visit a genuine Ayurvedic health spa. There are a number of these in Cape Town, operating independently or as part of the health spa offerings at upmarket hotels.
